The exhale island
Kauai is what people mean when they say they need to get away. The Na Pali Coast's impossible cliffs. Waimea Canyon — the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" — in full color. Hanalei Bay's perfect crescent. Wild chickens supervising every parking lot, to your children's unending delight.
It's the least populated of the main islands and the least built-up, which is precisely the appeal: fewer crowds, fewer decisions, more nature per mile than anywhere in Hawaii.
The weather rule that shapes everything
Kauai is the rainiest island on average — but averages lie. The south shore (Poipu) is sunny and dry most of the year, which is why families belong there: Poipu Beach's lifeguarded, naturally-protected swimming, walkable restaurants, and the island's best family resorts. The north shore (Princeville, Hanalei) is the drop-dead-gorgeous rainy half — glorious in summer, moody November through March, and reached by a single bridge.
South shore in winter. Either in summer. That one rule saves more Kauai trips than any other.

The days out
A Na Pali boat tour (morning departures are calmer — take the seasickness advice seriously), Waimea Canyon's lookouts with an easy rim walk, kayaking the gentle Wailua River, and a shave-ice-paced afternoon in Hanalei town. Older kids: a helicopter over the interior is the one Kauai splurge nobody regrets.

Is Kauai good for young kids?
Yes — with the south shore caveat. Poipu Beach has a lifeguarded natural toddler pool, the resorts there are built for families, and short nature outings suit small attention spans. It offers less built entertainment than Maui, which is either the drawback or the entire point.
Should families stay in Poipu or Princeville?
Poipu, for most families most of the year — it is the sunny, dry, calm-swimming corner of the island with the best family resorts. Princeville is spectacular in summer for older kids, but its winter rain and rougher water make it a scenery stay, not a swimming one.
How do families see the Na Pali Coast?
Three ways: a boat tour from the south (morning departures are calmest — kids five and up on most catamarans), a helicopter flight over the cliffs, or the Kalalau Trail’s first section for fit older kids. With little ones, the Waimea Canyon lookouts deliver similar drama with zero effort.
How many days is right for Kauai?
Six or seven nights: one Na Pali day, one canyon-and-west-side day, one Hanalei day in summer, and the rest on Poipu sand. Kauai punishes rushing — the driving is slower than the map suggests, and the island’s whole gift is the unhurried part.
