The 10 Best Maui Resorts for Families, Ranked by Fit

Maui has no shortage of resorts that claim to work for families. Finding one isn't the problem. The problem is that every property photographs identically and every list online awards all of them five stars for everything.

So here's the filter instead: ten resorts that actually deliver, sorted by the kid you're traveling with — and by the tradeoff you won't hear about until you're standing in the lobby.

Orient first: the three areas

Wailea (south shore) — sunniest, calmest morning water, the most polished properties, the shortest walk from pool to sand. Where I send most families who just want easy beach days. Kaanapali (west) — the classic big-resort beach: three miles of golden sand, Black Rock snorkeling, energy everywhere. Kapalua & Napili (northwest) — quiet coves, fewer people, less to do on property. The quiet is the point.

The ten

1. Grand Wailea — for kids who want a water park. Four slides, a lazy river, whitewater rapids, a rope swing, a water elevator inside a man-made volcano, and a 20,000-square-foot kids club with an arcade and movie theater. Your children will not ask to leave once. The tradeoff: it's enormous, it stays busy, and you're paying for that pool complex whether you use all of it or not.

2. Hyatt Regency Maui — the same energy for less. A 150-foot waterslide, waterfalls, a rope bridge, a separate kids' swim area — and penguins, parrots, and flamingos on the garden walk. Ululani's shave ice is right there. The tradeoff: no built-in kids club; supervised activities run on a fee.

3. Montage Kapalua Bay — quiet, full-service, away from the crowds. Residential villas with real space, six pools, and Kapalua Bay out front — genuinely one of the best little-kid beaches on the island. The Paintbox program covers ages 5–12 with a date-night option. The tradeoff: remote and pricey. You'll drive for most things off property.

4. Four Seasons Resort Maui — full service with the least effort. The complimentary kids club is rare at this level, kids under six eat free at two restaurants, cabanas are free, and popsicles find your lounger unprompted. The closest Maui gets to handled. 5. Honua Kai — for families who want a full kitchen. Condo suites with kitchens, laundry, private lanais, and space for everyone to sleep behind separate doors. Connecting family pools plus an adults-only one within sightline. This is where a lot of real families actually stay. The tradeoff: no kids club, no full-service hand-holding, and prices swing hard by season.

6. Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort — for the Hawaiian culture piece. Full-time cultural practitioners run complimentary daily lei-making, hula, ukulele, and Hawaiian-language classes, with live music in the evenings — and a whale-shaped pool the little ones adore. The tradeoff: the most low-key property on this list. No slides, no spa-resort polish. You're here for the culture and the value.

7. Napili Kai Beach Resort — the calm, low-key cove. Ten acres on Napili Bay, four pools, and water gentle enough for your family's newest snorkeler. Walking distance to the fancier neighbors when you want their evening entertainment. The tradeoff: no kids' programming — right for older kids and do-less families, wrong for toddlers who need structure.

8. Fairmont Kea Lani — for families who need to spread out. All-suite: 840 square feet minimum before you even reach the two- and three-bedroom villas. Waterslides, a kids' pool, a real kids club. The tradeoff: all-suite pricing. Worth it for five people; less so for three.

9. Sheraton Maui — snorkeling straight off the beach. The property sits on Black Rock, so the best snorkeling on Kaanapali starts at the end of your beach towel. Lagoon pool, waterslide, ocean views from most rooms. The tradeoff: big and busy in peak weeks — and if your family won't snorkel, you're paying for a location you won't use.

10. Marriott's Maui Ocean Club / Westin Maui — condo space on Kaanapali. Kitchens or kitchenettes, laundry, grills, and a 3.5-acre super pool with a pirate-ship slide — plus no resort fee, a Kaanapali rarity. The tradeoff: it's a timeshare property, so unit setups vary, renovation schedules shift, and you may get the membership pitch. Confirm your exact tower and what's open, in writing, before committing.

A note on West Maui

The 2023 fire was contained to Lahaina town, which remains a recovery zone — not a place to drive through or photograph. Kaanapali, Kapalua, and Napili sit north of it, fully open and running normally. Visiting and spending there is one of the most direct ways to support the community. Just give the recovery area its space.

The shortcut

Water-park kids: Grand Wailea or Hyatt. Babies and toddlers: Four Seasons or Montage. Big families: Kea Lani, Honua Kai, or the Marriott/Westin villas. Culture and value: Outrigger. Quiet: Napili Kai.
