Halloween in Hawaii with Kids: Yes, It’s a Thing — Here’s Where

Good news: you don't have to choose. Hawaii does Halloween with real enthusiasm — and late October happens to be one of the smartest, calmest windows of the whole year to visit. Warm water, thin crowds, soft rates. The costume is a bonus.

Oahu

Boo at the Zoo — the Honolulu Zoo's family Halloween is the best on the islands. Trick-or-treating across the stage lawn, a costume contest, face painting, story time, animal encounters, and two haunted houses — one built gentle enough for the little ones. A zoo, at golden hour, full of tiny costumed pirates. It's as good as it sounds.

Keiki in Costume at the Waikiki Aquarium — trick-or-treating between the tanks, spooky crafts, and marine-life education smuggled inside the sugar. Walkable from most Waikiki hotels, which matters at bedtime.

Hawaiian Railway's Spookapalooza — an evening ghost train in Ewa with games and food trucks. First departure at 7pm; wear the costume.

Pumpkin patches — Waimanalo Country Farms and Aloun Farms do the full mainland-fall experience, except the backdrop is the Ko'olau range and everyone's in slippers. The family photos are absurdly good.

For older kids who want to be scared, the Haunted Plantation in Waipahu is legitimately intense — one of the scariest attractions in the state. Know your audience.

Maui

Keiki Halloween Festival at the Imua Discovery Garden in Wailuku — trick-or-treating, live music, a costume contest, and a $5-per-family registration that makes it the best value of the season.

Halloween at the Maui Ocean Center — underwater pumpkin-carving demonstrations, which your kids will describe to their teacher in November with complete conviction and zero believability.

Kula Country Farms — a pumpkin patch on the slopes of Haleakala with hayrides, a corn maze, and an ocean view behind the wheelbarrows. Upcountry Maui in October is its own quiet reward.

For the grown-ups' half of the trip, this pairs beautifully with a Maui resort week — the pools are blissfully uncrowded in late October.

Kauai and the Big Island

Kauai keeps it neighborly: Kapaa's beloved decorated-yard traditions and small keiki events around Poipu — check the local calendar for your week. On the Big Island, the Kona side runs family costume nights and the coffee farms lean into harvest season, which happens to be exactly when the manta ray night snorkel is at its calmest.

The one thing to know about October swimming

By late October, winter swell starts arriving on north-facing shores. Waikiki, Poipu, and Wailea stay gentle — that's where your beach days live.
